[Artistic Telephony Lab]
This project explores landline telephony as a technology on the edge between the usual and the obsolete—a platform that is still available, although its use has become increasingly rare. In several countries, telephone lines have been digitalized to update their functionality, and new devices can still be easily found in various stores; however, landline telephony has largely fallen out of everyday use. Its residual presence and aesthetic qualities, therefore, lend themselves to experimentation.
Inspired by the visual and sound potential explored by artists such as Penguin Cafe Orchestra and by experiments like the Minuphone or the telephone paintings of Moholy-Nagy, the Laboratorio de Telefonía Artística is proposed as a space to collectively explore the technical and aesthetic possibilities of fixed-line telephones. Through workshops, experimental sessions, concerts, and installations, it offers opportunities to reimagine the uses of this technology and to revitalize the telephone system from an archaeological and experimental perspective.

In 2020, a domestic telephone switch came into my possession. I began using it for joking and experimenting, without a clear sense of my objectives. I connected four phones so they could communicate with each other, replaced their receivers with amplifiers, and then attempted to organize a concert (or performance) for four telephones with the help of other people.

The Ensayos Telefónicos are tests, partial or complete proclamations of an aesthetic proposal before its definitive presentation, even if that presentation only exists hypothetically. I take advantage of the fact that in Spanish, the word Ensayo serves both for Essay and Rehearsal, and I find in this expression a bit of both.
Much like in the performing arts (music or theatre), these rehearsal can sometimes be open to the public. The Ensayos Telefónicos are also named after the literary essay (understood as an open and free exploration of a topic), with the difference that they are not necessarily express with words. In contrast, they are closer to a transmedia essay, potentially involving objects, drawings, codes, videos, and even communicative situations. The Ensayos Telefónicos prioritize process over a finished object and experimentation over outcomes.
